Food and Drink in Galloway
Food and drink in Dumfries and Galloway is defined by quality, provenance and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. This is a region where menus are shaped by what’s grown, reared and landed nearby — from Solway seafood and locally farmed beef to artisan cheeses, chutneys and small-batch produce. Whether you’re looking for a memorable restaurant in Kirkcudbright, a relaxed café after a coastal walk, or local ingredients to cook back at your cabin, Galloway delivers a quietly exceptional culinary experience.
What sets Galloway apart is its independence. You won’t find chains or overly polished tourist menus — instead, it’s chef-owner restaurants, family-run pubs, and producers who genuinely care about quality. Menus change with the seasons, seafood is often landed just miles away, and even the simplest meals tend to be thoughtful, generous and full of flavour. It’s food that feels real — and that’s exactly the appeal.
Staying at Wild Galloway, you’re perfectly placed to explore it all. Spend the day walking quiet beaches or forest trails, then head out for a long, relaxed dinner — or pick up exceptional local produce and enjoy a slower evening back at your cabin, cooking, soaking outdoors, and unwinding completely.
Below, we’ve curated a small selection of our favourites — including three of the best local places to eat, three great spots for a drink, and three standout places to source exceptional Galloway produce to enjoy during your stay.
Best restaurants close to Wild Galloway
Swally N’ Scran in Kirkcudbright is an absolute cracker of a seafood restaurant and less than a 10 minute drive from Wild Galloway. If you only have time during your stay at our cabins to eat at one restaurant then we highly recommend eating here. It is only open Thursday - Sunday (and not even every Sunday!) and offers some exceptionally high quality and wide ranging seafood options. The quality and price is outstanding which is not surprising as it is owned by West Coast Sea Products who supply and process much of the seafood landing into Kirkcudbright, working directly with local boats along the Solway and west coast. Because they handle everything from catch to distribution, the produce is exceptionally fresh — often moving from sea to plate in a matter of hours. It’s a big part of why seafood in this area tastes so clean, sweet and genuinely local. If the restaurant is full then they also have the Skipper’s Scran Van that offers much of the same menu out of their trailer.

Slight further afield but definitely worth the 40 minute drive, The Clachann Inn located in Dalry offers outstanding gastro pub food. Typically closed on a Monday and Tuesday, we highly recommend booking in advance as there are not many tables and they are often fully booked. Seafood is a constant highlight — Cumbrae oysters never leave the menu and are perfect as a pre-starter — alongside seasonal dishes like Gelston partridge in game season or Galloway venison braised in a rich hot pot. Puddings are a serious strength too, from buttermilk pannacotta with new-season forced rhubarb to a dark chocolate dome with griotinne cherries and crème fraîche.

Snakatak: when only a bacon, egg and tattle scone roll will do! The morning-after antidote to a late night at the cabin, whisky in hand by the fire pit. It’s proper, no-nonsense comfort food: hot, salty, unapologetically greasy in the best possible way, best eaten on one of the benches that lines Kirkcudbright harbour (Snakatak is takeaway only!).
Best Places to Buy Local Produce in Galloway
Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s standout regions for beef and dairy, with a long farming heritage and a reputation for exceptional produce — in fact, the area produces more dairy than the rest of Scotland combined. That quality runs through everything, from local butchers and smokehouses to farm shops stocked with genuinely local, seasonal ingredients. With over 200 miles of coastline, the seafood is not too bad either! With a full kitchen, Big Green Egg and fire pit at the cabins, you’ve got everything you need to cook properly — whether it’s a simple breakfast or something more ambitious over the flames.
Halls Butchers in Kirkcudbright is the best closest butchers relative to Wild Galloway. Typically open 07:30am - 4:30pm and closed on Sunday and Monday. Halls is exactly what you want from a proper local butcher — excellent homemade pies, ready-to-cook marinated meats, and a strong selection of traditional cuts including beef, lamb, chicken and pork. It’s ideal for stocking up before heading back to the cabins, whether you’re planning a simple barbecue or something slower over the Big Green Egg.
Skippers Fishmongers is the retail arm of West Coast Sea Products, bringing their day-boat seafood directly to the public. Expect an ever-changing counter of ultra-fresh fish and shellfish from the Solway and west coast — the kind of place where you buy what’s best that day, knowing it’s been handled expertly from catch to counter. They also have an online shop where you can pre-order any items that they do not usually stock every day. In particular, we highly recommend reserving a couple of lobsters that are caught in lobster pots just off the coast of Brighouse Bay, and Cumbrae Oysters that have been caught off the west coast for generations:

Galloway Smokehouse is a 25 minute drive from the cabins and a perfect stop off if you are taking a day trip along the coast heading towards Portpatrick and Stranraer. It is a small, familyrun smokehouse known for its traditional methods and exceptional quality. They slow-smoke salmon, meats and cheeses over oak to create deep, balanced flavours without overpowering the produce. It’s an ideal stop for something a bit special to take back to the cabin — whether for breakfast, lunch, or a relaxed evening spread. Open everyday although typically shorter opening hours on a Sunday.

Galloway has a growing mix of independent distilleries, well-stocked merchants and characterful spots to enjoy a proper dram. Whether you’re picking up a bottle for the cabin or settling in for a slow evening drink, there’s plenty here to explore beyond the obvious.
Galloway Distillery is probably Galloway’s most famous distillery — not because it’s old, but because it’s owned by local lad turned global success Sam Heughan. Best known for its Sassenach spirits range, the distillery focuses on premium whisky and gin with a strong emphasis on provenance, storytelling and Galloway roots. It’s a modern addition to the region’s drinks scene, but one that’s quickly added to Galloway’s reputation of high quality distilling. There is a lovely onsite shop and distillery tours are available throughout the years.

Dark Art Distillery is the closest distillery to the cabins, just 10 minutes away in Kirkcudbright. A small, contemporary operation, it produces distinctive small-batch spirits with a creative, experimental edge — well worth a visit or an easy stop to pick up something unique for the cabin, particularly as there is a good chance you will be in Kirkcudbright at some point during your stay at Wild Galloway.

Bladnoch Distillery sits at the other end of the spectrum compared to newer names like Galloway Distillery and Dark Art, with over 200 years of whisky-making history. One of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries, it combines traditional Lowland style with modern craftsmanship to produce elegant, refined single malts. It’s well worth the short drive for a tour, tasting, or simply to experience a true piece of the region’s whisky heritage. It’s a 45 minute drive from Wild Galloway, and fits in perfectly as part of a drive down to the Isle of Whithorn or onto Portatrick and Stranraer.
