Golf in Galloway
Golf in Dumfries and Galloway flies under the radar — and that’s very much part of the appeal. It would be easy for the region to have a bit of a chip on its shoulder compared to Scotland’s headline names like St Andrew, Dornoch and Carnoustie, but in reality, it offers something many of those bigger destinations can’t: exceptional courses, far fewer crowds, and a far more relaxed pace of play.
From true links courses along the Solway coast to scenic inland layouts, the quality here is consistently high, with dramatic views, varied design and a strong sense of place. Green fees are typically far better value than Scotland’s marquee venues, and you’ll often feel like you’ve got the course to yourself. For anyone looking to play memorable golf without the formality, pressure or price tag of the big-name circuits, Galloway is one of the best-kept secrets in Scottish golf.
Southerness Golf Club is widely regarded as the best championship-level links course in Galloway. Set right on the Solway Firth, it offers a true test of coastal golf with firm fairways, natural dunes and ever-present wind. The course regularly hosts top-level amateur competitions and national events, underlining its reputation as one of the finest links layouts in the south of Scotland. Southerness golf course is a 50 minute drive from Wild Galloway and green fees start from around £80.
Gatehouse of Fleet Golf Club sits at the other end of the spectrum to Southerness — an inland, hilly 9-hole course (all the other courses on this list are 18 holes) that’s short on length but big on character. Set above the town with lovely views over the Fleet Valley, it offers a more relaxed, informal round with plenty of quirks and elevation to keep things interesting. Perfect for a quicker game or a more laid-back golfing experience during your stay. Just a 15 minute drive from the Wild Galloway cabins.
Kirkcudbright Golf Club is a fun, characterful inland course with plenty of doglegs and variety to keep you thinking on every hole. It’s the kind of place where course knowledge really pays off — something your author has built up over several hundred rounds here over the years. A relaxed and enjoyable track, perfect for a casual round without taking itself too seriously. The closest of all the courses in Galloway to the cabins at just a 10 minute drive.
Portpatrick Golf Club (Dunskey Course) is one of the most dramatic courses in the region, with clifftop holes overlooking the Irish Sea and views that rival some of Scotland’s most famous links. The Dunskey Course offers a varied and challenging layout, with elevation changes, coastal winds and a real sense of exposure adding to the test. It’s well worth the drive for both the golf and the scenery alone. At just over an hour’s drive from the cabins, you can combine various beach trips along the way, stopping also at the Kirroughtree Visitor Centre and maybe pick up some smoked salmon for the following morning’s breakfast at Galloway Smokehouse.
Golf in Dumfries and Galloway offers a superb mix of links and inland courses, combining highquality layouts, quieter fairways and excellent value compared to Scotland’s more famous golfing regions. From championship links like Southerness Golf Club to characterful inland tracks such as Kirkcudbright Golf Club, there’s more than enough here to build a memorable golfing stay.
For those wanting to venture further, world-renowned courses like Royal Troon Golf Club (around 1 hour 45 minutes) and Trump Turnberry (around 1 hour 30 minutes) are easily reachable for a day trip. But in truth, with the depth and variety of golf in Galloway itself, you won’t need to travel far to find outstanding courses. As a very keen golfer and having played all the above courses multiple times, your author would recommend Southerness for the best links experience in the area, and Gatehouse for a quick game where you will be back in your cabin in a couple of hours.
