Family Activities in Galloway

Family activities in Dumfries and Galloway are all about space, freedom and getting outdoors. This is one of the best regions in Scotland for active, nature-based days out — whether that’s exploring wide sandy beaches, heading into the forests for a walk, or getting out on the trails by bike. There’s a huge amount to do without needing busy attractions or long queues, making it ideal for families looking for something a bit more relaxed and adventurous.

Some of the best experiences are already covered in our dedicated guides — from coastal days out on our Beaches in Galloway page, to scenic routes in our Walking in Galloway page, and world-class trails explained in detail in our Cycling in Galloway page. In this guide, we’ve pulled together a selection of additional family-friendly activities across Galloway — from easy outdoor adventures to a few reliable options when the weather turns — all within easy reach of Wild Galloway.

Galloway Activity Centre is very much the other end of the spectrum to The Cocoa Bean — all about getting outside, getting wet, and burning off some energy. Set on the shores of Loch Ken, it offers a wide range of activities including kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and open water swimming, along with land-based options like archery and climbing. It’s a brilliant spot for more active families, especially on a good-weather day when the loch really comes into its own. A pleasant 35 minute drive from the Wild Galloway that takes you along the east coast of Loch Ken up to the activity centre.

The Cocoa Bean Company is one of the most popular family attractions in the area, built around hands-on chocolate-making and creative play. Children can make and decorate their own chocolate treats, explore indoor and outdoor play areas, and burn off energy while adults enjoy a good coffee. It’s a reliable all-weather option and an easy win if you’re looking for something structured and fun for younger kids. It is also one of the most accessible family activities in Galloway relative to the cabins at just a 10 minute drive away

Dalscone Farm Fun is a full-on family day out — think the Cocoa Bean turned up a notch, with more animals and more play areas. Kids can meet farm animals, race pedal go-karts, tackle outdoor play zones and dive into indoor soft play, while adults can regroup with coffee and something decent to eat. It’s a high-energy option and a dependable choice if you want to keep children entertained for a good few hours. Dalscone Farm is a 50 minute drive from Wild Galloway, however there is a good chance that you will drive past it in Dumfries at the start or end of your trip, so it offers a great stop off during the drive.

Kirroughtree Visitor Centre is an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Galloway Forest Park and everything it has to offer. From here you’ll find well-marked walking trails, one of the 7stanes mountain biking centres, and easy access into the forest itself, along with practical facilities like a café, bike hire and visitor information. It’s an ideal base for families — whether you’re after a gentle woodland walk or something a bit more adventurous on two wheels. The visitor centre is a 35 minute drive from the Wild Galloway cabins.

Mabie Farm Park offers a similar style of day out to Dalscone, but on a slightly smaller, more outdoors-focused scale. There are plenty of hands-on farm animals, go-karts, play areas and seasonal activities, but with a bit more emphasis on open space and fresh air rather than large indoor attractions. It’s a great alternative if you’re after something a little more low-key while still keeping younger children well entertained. Our guests often like to combine Mabie Farm Park with a quick stop at Caerlaverock Castle. The 569m peak of Criffel is also a short drive from Mabie Farm Park which is a relatively steep but accessible climb, offering exception views of the Solway Firth and onto the Lake District.

Cardoness Castle is a well-preserved 15th-century tower house set just above the Fleet estuary, offering a glimpse into life on the Scottish Borders in the late medieval period. You can climb through its narrow staircases and rooms to get a real sense of how it was lived in, with excellent views from the top over the surrounding countryside. It’s also a good opportunity to slip in a bit of history and culture between beach trips and bike rides — whether the kids realise it or not.

Drumlanrig Castle is one of Scotland’s most impressive stately homes, home of the Duke of Buccleuch, and makes for an excellent family day out. Set within a vast estate, it combines grand interiors and art collections with huge outdoor space — including walking trails, adventure playgrounds and seasonal family activities. It’s ideal if you want to mix a bit of history with plenty of room for kids to run around and explore. It is an hour and 15 minute drive from Wild Galloway, but if you are visiting us from somewhere north like Glasgow or Edinburgh you will be driving close by to it. If you are coming to us from south of the border then it is about a 35 minute detour from the Dumfries bypass. So similarly to Mabie Farm Park, many guests visit Drumlanrig Castle at the start or end of they stay at Wild Galloway.
